Virginia Tech under lockdown because of report of gunman


Virginia Tech officials say students on its website to keep the interior doors and secure because of one report of a person with a weapon in the region.

The alert, issued at 9:37, said the person with a gun had been seen near Dietrick Hall, a dining room.

Dietrick, a story of three, a center of 93,000 square meters of eating, also houses a convenience store, laundry center and Bake Shop, the Richmond Times-Dispatch notes.

The Associated Press says the dining room is just steps away from where the shooting took place in 2007.

Upgrade to 11:23 ET Huchler Amanda, a student on campus, says Rachel Roubein USA Today that he is among the students closed in Hahn Hall. "The professor is still teaching," he says. "Everyone is calm, and nobody seems worried. Tech does a great job to keep everyone safe."

"Desired result" Larry Hincker, associate vice president for University Relations, said the report was of three students participating in a camp called He says there are a number of camps held during the Consumer school year, a few days to some others. Asked about the alert, Hincker said: "The watch is in effect until further notice. We are asking people to stay indoors until they hear again."

Update at 11:09 ET: Virginia Tech police chief Wendell Flinchum says no one is in custody, and the alarm remains in force.

At 9:09 three young people to participate in a camp at the University reported seeing a white male, 6 feet tall, with light brown hair outside of New Residence Hall East holds what could be a weapon fire. They say the arms were covered with a cloth or blanket of some sort. He walked quickly to the volleyball. He wore a blue shirt and white stripes (stripes were vertical), gray shorts and brown sandals. The subject had no facial hair or glasses.

The officers immediately responded to the area but found no one matching the description. The police found no reports of other witnesses to this person or anything suspicious. VTPD police officers, Blacksburg PD, PD Christiansburg, Virginia State Police and sheriff's patrol Montgomery County campus, while searching the subject. ...

People should stay inside the campus.

Update at 10:35 ET: John Beck, a student who is on campus for the summer, but no official announcement at school, says he got the first warning text 9:41 ET.

Update at 10:32 ET: the police at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Montgomery County were on campus in search of the subject, Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

Update at 10:25 ET: the school website says three young people who participate in the field of Virginia Tech reported seeing a man holding what could be a gun, according to the Associated Press.

They said it was covered by a cloth or some sort, and the man was walking in the direction of volleyball.

Lynn Davis, a spokesman for the school, told CNN the man is described as a white man with light brown hair, wearing a blue shirt and white striped. He is also wearing shorts and sandals, she said.

Police in Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Montgomery County were on patrol on campus, while searching the subject.

Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, was the scene of a shooting in April 2007 that left 32 dead and 25 wounded.
