Syrian Military Assault Mounted In Another City

BEIRUT, Lebanon - The Syrian Army has defied growing condemnation and launched a new assault on the most contentious in the country on Sunday, the deployment of dozens of tanks and armored vehicles in the parts of a city is that Syria had always feared provoking activists and residents. Dozens of people died, they said, and thousands have fled the city.

The attack before dawn in the eastern part of the city, in Deir al-Zour came exactly one week after Syrian troops attacked Hama, Syria, in the city center, in turn largely wrested control of the state this summer . As Hama, Deir al-Zour, Syria's oil and gas production, was the scene of mass protests, with hundreds of thousands in the streets. But the military, wary of powerful and well-armed clans advanced cities, had largely stayed out.

Together, the two cities - the fourth and fifth of Syria - were the most suspicious of a survey of five months against four decades of rule by the Assad family. After a week of sharp rebuke by a chorus of international voices, the United Nations for the Pope renewed the attack confirmed what many consider the determination of President Bashar al-Assad to stay in power through violence.

Including some human rights groups, has more than 2,000 people were killed in the attacks so far.

Other signs of pressure on the government were introduced, perhaps above all indications that the business elite in Damascus, he began to prepare for the fall of the government. This elite has long proven one of the most important pillars of the Syrian authorities, especially during the Islamic uprising in 1982.

"The regime is its own worst enemy, and can be saved from itself," said a Damascus-based analyst, who asked to remain anonymous. "It has been the collapse, but the question is what will lead to and when."

Residents of the death toll at Deir al-Zour, 42, and one of them said that a family of six people trying to escape - a couple with four children - was among the dead. The activists said that many residents have left in recent days. A local man who gave his name as Mamun said the truck filled with no fewer than 25 women and children fled to the streets every abandoned.

He said there were shortages of fuel and bread. Other residents said the private hospitals have closed, but that families were reluctant to take their wounded to the government, not to be arrested. At night, another resident said that Syrian forces had come to a roundabout in the center of the city, formerly called Assad and the Plaza of Martyrs name. "

"The city has never known a day like this," said Maamoun telephone, with bursts of gunfire heard in the background.

On weekends, calls for restraint mounted. The Arab League expressed "growing concern" Sunday and asked the authorities to stop attacks against the demonstrators. Pope Benedict XVI called Sunday for Assad to meet the "legitimate aspirations" of the people of Syria and Turkey announced it was sending his foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu in Damascus on Tuesday, with a similar message.

In a statement to Al Arabiya television on Monday, called King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to the violence unacceptable and said he remembers the Saudi ambassador in Damascus.

For weeks, activists had predicted that the Syrian Muslim holy month of Ramadan would bring an escalation of the insurgency, as every night demonstrators gathered in mosques, then organized the demonstrations. Instead, the government decided it was time for a large-scale assault on the cities seemed most determined to shake off the yoke of the security forces everywhere.

From Deir al-Zour and Hama are the targets of repression that involve risks specific to Syria.

In 1982, Hama was the victim of one of the bloodiest moments in the history of the Modern Middle East, where the army crushed an Islamist revolt there and killed at least 10,000 people. The attack last week in which more than 200 people lost their lives, feelings inflamed by Syria.

Deir al-Zour may be no less frustrating for the government, but for different reasons. Armed and fiercely independent, the clans have extensive ties there are tribes in eastern Syria and western Iraq. In recent days, some of its leaders had sworn to give to the peaceful demonstrations and to take up arms if the attacking force, but no reports of injuries on Sunday the government.

The city is also home to the complaints of government neglect, compounded by the feeling that people have not participated in the region's oil and gas wealth. "I can say that the clock will never return," said a leader of a clan, who identified himself as Abu Mohammed Ala'aqidi.

Days, the army forces had been built on the outskirts of Deir al-Zour. Traveler recently there about 150 tanks, 200 armored vehicles and 200 microphones mounted machine guns were posted throughout the city. Local Coordination Committees, a group that has tried to document and organize the protests, said the attack began before dawn, the soldiers captured nine suburbs.

"We're completely surrounded," said the pilot who gave the name of Abu Omar.

Introduction The attack was familiar. Although no weapons were seen Hama visit shortly before the siege, officials claimed the army had come there to fight the armed Islamists, who were terrorizing the city of 800,000

On Saturday, he offered a narrative similar to that of Deir al-Zour, with a population of 500,000. A report by the official Syrian news agency, SANA, the clan elders had called the army to go into "protect citizens and preserve public and private property."

Residents reached by telephone offered a different account.

"Syria needs to now be managed by the officials hard, not politicians," said Ammar, a 26 year old activist in Deir al-Zour. "I fear that the country is entering a dark cave, and everyone is a loser. Loser The first is President Assad and his regime."

Tensions have mounted in Deir al-Zour last month when security forces arrested Sheikh Nawaf al-Bashir, a figure bearing the clan. Clan elders and Syrian security officials and military have been negotiating for several days, but Sunday assault seemed to signal the government's intention to take the city by force, activists said.

"The government has been very careful to start a military operation in our region," Ammar said, "because most of the tribesmen are armed with AK-47 rifles and others, and are willing to fight and let the system to do the same thing as he did in Hama, or Dara'a "the city where the rebellion began in March.

"If the government has attacked Deir al-Zour, which all the tribes in the other provinces show against the Assad regime," he added.

There have been periodic reports of defections in the military Deir al-Zour, although still seem to be limited, and does not constitute an immediate threat to Assad, who inherited power in 2000. Coordinating Committees, said that other soldiers have deserted Jour quarter of the city on Sunday.

"He jumped soldiers trying to protect residents of the storm the city," the committee said. There was no immediate confirmation of the report by the inhabitants there.

Deir al-Zour was not only to attack the government. Syrian forces also attacked Houla, near Homs in central Syria, and northwest of Idlib. The committee said 12 people died in Hula, including three children.

The scale and ferocity of the repression gave a facade almost surreal persistent desire to reform government. In the last Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Saturday that the real multiparty elections for Parliament in the first rule of the Assad family, would take place later this year. SANA quoted him as saying that the elections "free and transparent."

The same day, the promise of Mr. Moallem, security forces arrested Walid al-Bunni, a leading opposition figure and former political prisoner, with his two children. Mr Bunni has been a driving force called Damascus Spring, an attempt to organize a movement for democratic reform in 2000, Assad soon crushed.

American Debt Crisis: U.S. House Passes Bill Debt

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a last-minute agreement to avoid a failure of the federal debt - 269 votes against 161 when angry Democrats have turned their fire on President Barack Obama accused of capitulating to the Republicans.

As the House of Representatives passed a bill last minute to raise the debt limit of the United States and reduce costs by $ 2.4 trillion, the left felt betrayed by the White House, saying that the price paid for Republican support was too high.

Legislation must be approved by the Senate on Tuesday, hours before the United States was due to the breach of its obligations for the first time in its history.

It was approved by 269 votes against 161 votes as liberal and Republicans unhappy Tea Party, who wanted more spending cuts voted against it.

Representative Emanuel Cleaver, D-Missouri, said: "This agreement is a sugar-coated sandwich Satan If you take the bread, you do not like what you see .."

Another, Cedric Richmond to New Orleans, said he feared that it would be "devastating" for working and middle class families, who said he would take responsibility for the cuts.

The agreement between the leaders of the White House and the party in the House of Representatives and Senate during the tense discussions over the weekend will allow Obama to take the same amount, 2.4 billion dollars to enable the government to meet its debt obligations in 2013.

But it came with strings attached to cut large dollar debt ballooning national 14300000000000.

About $ 1000000000000 immediately cut public spending, with an additional $ 1.4 billion to an agreement before year's end.

Liberals who once idolized Obama was furious that the White House has failed to turn their arms in Congress the Republicans', and includes the income of the transaction by closing tax loopholes for oil companies, and removes a series of tax cuts for the benefit the rich. The savings made entirely of spending cuts, even if conservatives are forced to swallow the expected savings for the military.

The liberal organization MoveOn base, described the agreement as "grotesquely immoral."

"Our members are asking," What in God's name is going on in Washington DC? "Said Justin Ruben, executive director of the group, which claims five million members.." The country needs jobs, and Washington to discuss this vital program to cut "," Michael Tomasky, a liberal commentator wrote: "This is the lowest point of the Obama presidency."

While George W. Bush has destroyed the country "by the rank incompetence," Obama "is to simply give the Republicans the keys to the house and say," Take what you want, "he told The Daily Beast.

In the New Republic, Jonathan Chait, said: "There is a limit to the amount of faith can be placed on a man who so badly misjudged the political opponents time and again."

Robert Borosage, co-director of the Campaign for America's Future, a liberal think tank, accused Obama of giving in to the "Tea Party terrorists - the extremist faction willing to hold the economy hostage to achieve their goals" .

The cuts will not improve the slow recovery, which in turn affect the prospects of Obama for a second term, he argues.

The figures released yesterday showed that U.S. manufacturing grew at its slowest pace in two years in July as new orders received.

"I think it is in increasing danger. The whole argument against it was four years ago and no job is not an argument that will be stronger and stronger," said Borosage.

Without a major effort to create jobs, the Alliance of young voters, African Americans, Hispanics and single women that Obama is elected in 2008 could be a vote for the first time, he added.

"Right now, his base is all that he left in 2008. Self-Democrats and the working class began to flee," said Ed Morrissey, Hot Air is a blog. "This agreement will not bring those voters, and his organization and the source of funding could largely abandon it."

The White House defended the deal, saying it "is not the case that the Democrats" did nothing ".

"We believe that presidential leadership is essential for this process," said Jay Carney, a spokeswoman for the White House.

"Voodoo" Series As The Lottery Gives £ 200k To Spiritual Healers Available On The NHS

Spiritual healing that have been labeled as "voodoo" by its critics is to provide patients with the NHS £ 205 000 research project funded by the National Lottery.

Healers pass their hands over the patient's body to the "healing energy" channel of the affected areas 20-minute sessions designed to see whether the treatment relieves the discomfort.

According to its proponents energy work, "as a set of jumper cables and can relieve mild pain. But critics say that the cure has no scientific basis and the money raised through the lottery should not be used to promote alternative medicine that is pressed when the NHS money.
A Big Lottery Fund grant for the two-year investigation was distributed to charitable healing cool breeze, in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and Good Hope Hospital NHS in Sutton Coldfield.

Three healers Good Hope is to recruit 200 patients with intestinal diseases.

Patients were divided into two groups, one receiving and the other five soon after the three months late. The group, which was compared with time after treatment, which does not exist.

Sukhdev Singh, a consultant in gastroenterology at the coordination of research, said he was encouraged by the results so far.

He added: "For many people, we see the usual treatments do not provide a complete answer to be able to offer treatment, we are able to offer complementary methods of treatments have had good results.".

But a patient said, Good Hope, which has refused to join the process.

"How can a person who runs his hand over, you can make a difference, I really do not know," he said. "I think there's a certain amount of human despair accommodate.

"The healing seems to be based on Buddhist spiritual practice of Reiki, which is ironic, when the Christian doctors and nurses are advised to pray for their patients. "

According Healing Trust, Britain's largest improvements in the organization of which he is a member of the fresh winds, healing works by correcting the "imbalance in the flow of energy." Trust leaflet says that the treatment is usually "no-touch", and that patients are dressed.

He added: "It is normal to feel tingling, warmth, coolness or discomfort that comes to the surface to be released as the work of healing energy or you may feel a thing - it makes no difference to the result ..

The Web site adds fresh winds: .. "The healing energy is all around us In the end, it is universal - part of nature itself according to their individual beliefs, see some healers and recipients of divine energy, while others consider it as a pure universal energy. It is often viewed as simply "love and light." '

Alternative medicine as a healing or homeopathy have been gaining acceptance in the NHS, with support from influential figures like Prince Charles.

Many NHS trusts allow healers to use on a voluntary basis in hospitals, and supporters say it is increasingly clear that the method can be effective.

But critics, including leading scientists and doctors have attacked public funding of such treatment.

Simon Singh, author of Trick or Treatment? Alternative Medicine on Trial, said: "The £ 200 000 must be spent on much better causes. There is no evidence at all that good work of spiritual healing in any way, shape or form other than the placebo effect - when the patient feels better just because they get some attention.

"You can use the money for this lottery is to introduce health in voodoo.

"It's really tragic to spend money this way, when so many real answer medical questions."

Simon Singh, co-author, Professor Edzard Ernst of Exeter University in complementary medicine, said: "It makes a mockery of evidence-based medicine to put public money in this."

Big Lottery Fund, said the results should be presented in the NHS next year to inform their decision whether some complementary therapies in the management of irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.

To Tilt The Blade Right Rift Obama Party

WASHINGTON - However, the ends of the debt limit showdown, one thing is clear: under pressure from Republicans in Congress, President Obama has shifted to the right on fiscal policy, the deepening cracks in his party, go to upcoming elections.

Entering a campaign that promises to be an epic clash of parties' views differ on the size and role of the federal government, the Republicans changed the terms of national debate. Obama, seeking to appeal to independent voters broadband, Republicans have adopted the language and in some cases, their politics, while signaling a desire to break with liberal on some issues.

It has some progressive members of Congress and liberal groups to claim that the struggle to spend no more stimulus, Obama may end up with an economy that continues to produce so few jobs before election day that his re-election could be threatened. In addition to turning off independent risks alienating Obama's Democratic voters are already disappointed with his escalation of the war in Afghanistan and its inability to close the Guantanamo prison, at the end of the tax cuts of the Bush era and adopt a government-run health insurance.

"The liberal grassroots support Obama because they are terrified by the right wing," said Robert L. Borosage, co-leader of the liberal group Campaign for America's future.

But he said: "I think the Democratic Party's electoral base - young single women, African Americans, Latinos - will be so discouraged by this economy, and so horrified, unless the President begins to fight for a jobs program and the Republican Congress to assume that the ability to work to turn his vote, the ability of activists to mobilize the vote that will be significantly reduced. "

While Obama and Republicans have reached agreement on debt reduction plan of spending cuts and revenue increases to cut the $ 4 trillion in the first decade, on Saturday, have negotiated an agreement with less spending cuts to ensure that the debt ceiling National to be lifted in 2013 in order to avoid a stalemate in the heat of the campaign season.

No matter how immediate the problem is solved, Obama, in his effort failed to reduce the deficit larger, is on the table a lot more spending reductions in the coming years, such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, as did the new income between rich and businesses. He has proposed military spending cuts and less health to the reciprocal of the Senate group, which includes a section of the most conservative Republicans.

To win the approval of the essential increase the borrowing limit 14300000000000 country, Obama has sought the deficit that the Republicans do, and with fewer changes in entitlement programs because he was prepared to generate additional revenue from 2013 and they were not. And despite the persistence of unemployment to its highest level in decades, Obama has not fought this year for a program of major works with billions of dollars for public works projects, which in the Liberal party said. Instead, he wants to extend a temporary payroll tax cut for everyone, because the Republicans support tax cuts, despite studies showing that spending programs are often the most effective stimulus.

Even before the last election in November gave the Republicans control the House, Obama said he would turn to reduce the deficit after two years of recovery measures are primarily intended to save the economy and encourage a return to near-collapse the financial system. With Republican gains in congressional elections, which became the pivot of rotation. However, Republicans in Congress say that Mr. Obama is seeking an increase in the debt limit as a "blank check" to keep spending.

"The Republicans have won and do not know how to accept the victory," said Robert D. Reischauer, former director of the Congressional Budget Office.

In his budget in January, fell to Obama to propose a plan along the lines proposed by the majority of its non-partisan Tax Commission in December 4000 recommended billions of dollars in savings over 10 years through cuts in programs military and domestic, including Medicare and Medicaid, and an overhaul of the tax code to lower prices, while raising more revenue.

While Barack Obama has been criticized from all sides, the administration officials said then that having adopted this approach so it would have too far to the right - where he would eventually end up in any compromise with the Republicans, and not where he wanted to start.

But this month, ultimately unsuccessful talks with President John A. Boehner, Obama tentatively agreed to a plan that was fairer than most of the Tax Commission and a bipartisan group of senators called six times. It also included a gradual increase in the Medicare eligibility age to 67 from 65 and, after 2015, a change in the formula for Social Security cost of living, long sought by economists.

"He has to adapt to new realities in Washington," said Tom Davis, a former House Republican leader of Virginia. "This is what leaders do."

But Congressional Democrats and liberal groups have protested.

"The President proposed cuts in Social Security and Medicare have the potential to SAP energy in the Democratic base - among older voters because of Medicare and Medicaid and young voters because of the lack of jobs," Damon Silvers A. said, political director of the AFL-CIO "And secondly, these fiscal tightening on the table to make the economy worse."

Obama's situation has parallels in mid-1990, when President Bill Clinton moved to the center after taking the Republicans in Congress and have fought to reduce the deficit and an overhaul of welfare. Many Democrats were angered by his confession of a feeling of being left out of negotiations and a fear of offending Democratic constituencies. Clinton was reelected in 1996.

But Obama will outline to voters and the decline in unemployment during the reign of Clinton. Still, his advisers express confidence that voters will reward Obama is to win a lot of mortgage, if this were to happen, or at least its more balanced approach, which is a remake of the Medicare and Medicaid, and to demand more income from the rich . And another parallel can suggest the Clinton years, divided government: that the risk of Republican voters a setback with the uncompromising stands.

"Democrats created Social Security and Medicare, and we have fought for decades against Republican attempts to end these programs," said Dan Pfeiffer, communications director of Obama. "And Obama believes that the time has come for Democrats to be the ones to strengthen and save Social Security and Medicare. "

Mark Mellman, a Democratic pollster, said the survey results showed that, at this point in his term, Mr. Obama, compared with former Democratic president, has done as well or better with Democratic voters. "Whatever misgivings or doubts you may have about this policy or the policy at the end of the day all you are absolutely sure - will hate the Republican candidates," M. Mellman said. "So I'm not so worried about a solid or an honest enthusiasm."
