New Shrews Found in Indonesia

Found a white-toothed shrews Crocidura kind of (photo) is one of four species of shrews potential new discoveries in the field study of Mount Tompotika April 1, a small mountain on the eastern tip of the island Indonesia's Sulawesi (map). DNA analysis will reveal which of these mammals are truly new to science.

Like all shrews, mammals have small eyes and a strong sense of smell strongly to search for small invertebrates such as earthworms, said team member Jake Esselstyn, a biologist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada.

"People do not appreciate how little is known about the natural world, even basic as the number of species of Sulawesi," Esselstyn said.

"This kind of work is important to [show] how many species live in specific places, which is its evolutionary history, and how we can conserve natural resources and biological communities."
